The Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The Agency was launched on 1 October 2014 and consists of around 2,300 staff based at sites across Great Britain. Our mission is the “Safeguarding animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy”.
Much of APHA’s scientific activity is focused on protecting Great Britain against the threat and impact of a wide variety of animal diseases and other species conflicts. We have the capability and commitment to deliver a wide range of animal and public health and welfare policies for the different Government Administrations. This ranges from field activity on-farm through to specialist laboratory and scientific services, including NGS technologies, risk assessment and epidemiological sciences. As well as delivering our routine work we maintain a key capability to respond to animal disease emergencies both in the field in Great Britain but also, through our reference laboratory function, to support the management of disease in Northern Ireland, the European Union and worldwide. Indeed, APHA hosts 16 OIE reference laboratories (including Salmonella, Antimicrobial Resistance, Scrapie & BSE), 3 European reference laboratories (including TSEs), 3 FAO reference centres, 2 WHO reference centres and 22 national reference laboratories (including Camplylobacter, Antimicrobial Resistance, Salmonella and TSEs).
Our main customer is Government – specifically Defra and the Scottish and Welsh Governments. We also provide services to the Food Standards Agency, other government departments, the farming industry, international bodies and commercial customers worldwide. We work closely with Public Health England (PHE) with whom we work jointly to control and prevent zoonotic infections.
