The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) is a government agency accountable to the Ministry of Health, established in January 2002 with approximately 950 employees. The NIPH is responsible for providing research based summaries and systematic reviews for the health sector within the topics infectious diseases, physical and mental health, environmental factors influencing health, implementation of health-promoting measures in the population and global health issues. In addition to providing knowledge and information on disease prevention and health promotion to the government, to the health services and to the general public, NIPH conducts health surveillance and research.
NIPH is responsible for 10 out of the 17 national health registries, manages one of the two largest Norwegian biobanks in the Biobank Norway network, and manages data from Norway’s regional health studies. The NIPH also collaborates with the WHO, EU, EEA, sister institutions, universities, organizations and health authorities in low and middle-income countries on global health issues.
