The National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA) is an autonomous Public Research Organisation (OPI) of the State Secretariat of Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. It’s the only public research organisation of the National State Administration exclusively dedicated to agrifood and forestry research. INIA’s mission, in coordination with the equivalent institutions of the Autonomous Regions, is to contribute to continuous and sustainable progress through development of environmentally friendly technologies. Its priority objectives are to satisfy the new research demands on agricultural, livestock and forestry production, mitigate the effects of global change and contribute to food safety and the fight against hunger. Research activities are developed by the seven Departments and three Centers at INIA, among this centres there is the INIA-CISA (Center for Animal Health Research).
Located in Valdeolmos, Madrid, INIA-CISA (Center for Animal Health Research) is a centre for research and surveillance in the prevention, diagnosis and control of animal transmissible diseases. It is particularly focused on emerging, re-emerging and transboundary infectious diseases of livestock causing economical and sanitary impact, including zoonosis and resistance to antimicrobials: (environmental and health evaluation) , that may cause restrictions in trade and a serious effect on public health and food security. Its primary mission is to promote advanced research, technology development, cooperation with national and international bodies and technology transfer in the area of animal health, following the strategic priorities agreed by national and international forums and organizations of relevance in the area.
INIA- CISA is Reference Laboratory for the European Union and for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for African Swine Fever, and an active regular collaboration is established with more than fifty countries worldwide. In addition, CISA has got other nominations as Reference Centre in Biosafety for FAO, as partner of the Spanish Biological Alert Laboratory Network (RE-LAB) and as Spanish Singular Scientific Technical Facility (ICTS), named RELASB (network of High Biosafety Laboratories).
Among the INIA-CISA activities, it is important to point out the active collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, giving support in certain tasks of the National Reference Laboratories. In addition to the active collaboration as partner through research projects with many European institutes and others worldwide, CISA actively participates in a number of networks of excellence, emphasizing EPIZONE, DISCONTOOLS and Global Platforms for epizootic diseases, diagnosis and control.
