The National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinarian Research I. P. (INIAV) is the State Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, that develops research activities in the agricultural and veterinary fields and provides official services to farmers and industry, public and private entities. INIAV promotes research, experimentation and demonstration, according to the public policies, in order to ensure the technical and scientific support needed for the development, innovation and competitiveness in the areas of forestry, crop’s protection, food technology, food safety and animal health and production. The preservation and management of the plant and animal germoplasm’s databases are also INIAV’s responsibilities. INIAV has a network of 15 centers located throughout Portugal, in close proximity to the various sectors of animal and agriculture production. These centers conduct their activities in three major areas: Animal Health and Production, Food Safety (chemical and microbiological) and Plant Health and Protection. The National Reference Laboratory of Animal Health and the OIE International Reference Laboratory for CBPP, with accredited laboratories, is settled in Oeiras. Other reference laboratories are the National Reference Laboratory of Food Safety (Vairão), of Feed and Feedstuff (Oeiras and Vairão), and of Plant Health and Genetically Modified Organisms (Oeiras). These reference laboratories are internationally recognized in the areas of epidemiology, microbiology, molecular biology, antimicrobial resistance, toxins, chemical residues and physico-chemical contamination.
INIAV, as the National Reference Laboratory of Animal Health, has a relevant mission in the study of animal infectious diseases, some also transmitted to humans, and in the study of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from animals and from food of animal origin. This Reference Laboratory encloses four accredited areas: Bacteriology and Mycology, Virology, Parasitology and Pathology and TEEs. All together these areas contribute to reduce the negative impact of animal and zoonotic diseases in economy, animal production and public health sectors.
INIAV’s performance in areas such as Food Safety, Plant Health, Animal Health and Genetic Resources can bring a unique and fundamental contribution to the country’s development.
