The National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), as the Portuguese State Laboratory in the health sector, National Reference Laboratory and National Health Observatory, takes advantage of its unique and critical perspective on public health to constantly provide leadership for innovative research in Public Health and contributes to the development of new diagnostic and health promotion tools. The research data obtained supports evidence-based policy-making, all in pursuit of creating and expanding scientific knowledge and improving population health by preventing disease at all levels: individual, community, national and global.
To accomplish its mission and responsibilities, INSA is structured in six departments that develop research activities and health services in their domains: Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Food and Nutrition, Health Promotion and Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases, Human Genetics and Infectious Diseases. INSA research is strengthened by collaborations through partnerships with other top business and research institutions in the scope of national and international networks, ensuring a global and dynamic exchange of scientific knowledge and information.
INSA is recognized by the scientific excellence of its multidisciplinary staff that assures its ability to create and disseminate high quality data ranging from fundamental research to regulatory science, encompassing exposure research, applied science and global health. These activities are set in alignment with national and international research priorities and societal challenges, allowing a successfully build up research and innovation capabilities and the ideal scientific environment for promotion of health literacy and training hub.
