The Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS) is the main research institution in the field of public health in Italy and the technical and scientific body of the Italian National Health Service. The ISS mission is to promote and protect public health through research, surveillance, regulation, control, prevention, communication, counselling and training. ISS carries out research activities at national and international levels and is involved in several international activities, including scientific and technical support to the European Commission, WHO, EFSA, ECDC, IARC, OECD, OIE, UNEP, and other organizations.
The ISS is organized in 6 Departments, 16 National Centers, 2 Reference Centers, encompassing all public health areas.
In the area of food safety, nutrition and veterinary public health, the ISS develops research activities as well as tools and strategies aimed at ensuring One-Health approaches, based on surveillance, risk assessment, control and research on biological hazards, including bacterial and viral agents, prions, parasites as well as contaminants and chemical hazards and in promoting the adoption of healthy diets. In these areas, 3 EU and 16 National Reference Laboratories are hosted at the ISS ensuring the networking with technical bodies and competent authorities at both the national and EU levels. Moreover, assessment of the environmental risks for human health and environmental monitoring, biomonitoring and surveillance are also carried out at the ISS. The EFSA Focal Point is also located at the ISS, supporting the activities and fostering the circulation of information on Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety between EFSA and the national level. The ISS is Focal Point of the FWD-ECDC with the aim of disseminating information provided from ECDC and supporting the surveillance activities.
