    National Public Health Institute (NPHI, in Hungarian Országos Közegészségügyi Intézet, OKI) is a government institute in Hungary with national competence, and is responsible for developing and controlling the national public health programs. In order to fulfil the public health goals, such as environmental and settlement health, child and young health, radiohygiene and chemical safety, epidemiology, microbiology, health development and occupational health, NPHI is divided into several directorates, and performs managing, coordinating and supervising activities of the directorates responsible for the different tasks. The primary mission of Directorate of Clinical and Public Health Microbiology of National Public Health Institute is the diagnostics and research of communicable diseases. Home for many of the country’s reference laboratories, and WHO national reference laboratories, NPHI is working with a wide range of microorganisms, including BSL-3 and BSL-4 pathogens. Part of NPHI, the National BSL-4 and BSL-3 Laboratory ensures technical and professional background for diagnosis and research on dangerous pathogens. The professional capacity of the institute is frequently tested in international quality control assays and proficiency tests. The institute is member of many international networks, and co-operations, enabling it to receive and share first-hand information on new techniques and emerging threats. A significant collection of medical microorganisms and a national serum bank is also operated by NPHI. Among its main research and diagnostic fields, working with emerging threats and zoonotic pathogens is of high importance, and NPHI is the only authorised laboratory to diagnose human infections of such kind. Besides its primary mission, NPHI is also involved in training of health care professionals specializing in medical or clinical microbiology, epidemiology, infectology, or preventive medicine, and under-graduate and postgraduate training. With its reference laboratory competence, the institute is organising annual trainings and conferences for health professionals of the regional laboratories and participates in elaborating national guidelines. Because of their extended diagnostic spectrum, the national reference laboratories of NPHI perform confirmatory and complementary diagnostic analysis for the regional laboratories.

    The National Reference Laboratory of Viral Zoonoses, National Public Health Institute participated in the JRP04-ET-1-MAD-Vir subproject. Our laboratory deal with diagnostic analysis of endemic and imported zoonotic viruses such as West-Nile, tick-borne encephalitis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and hantaviruses. Our laboratory provide minimum 47 samples of human origin annually and send them to the coordinating Statens Serum Institut for validation of PanVirusMicroarray method.
