RIVM is a governmental research and knowledge institute providing policy support to the Dutch government. It is a recognized cente of expertise in the fields of health, infectious diseases, nutrition and food safety and environment and safety. The work of RIVM is primarily commissioned by Dutch ministries and inspectorates and projects are also undertaken within international frameworks. RIVM experts participate in various international networks and projects and are members of many international scientific committees and experts panels of the EU, WHO and other international organisations. RIVM has a proven track record regarding the execution of EU funded projects, has participated in 70 FP7 projects and is currently involved in 15 Horizon 2020 projects. RIVM harbours the Centre for Infectious Disease Control Netherlands which coordinates the control of infectious diseases, including effective prevention, close vigilance and quick response in the event of an outbreak, and contributes to reducing health problems related to infectious diseases. RIVM is responsible for the early warning and risk assessment of the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms from animals, food and the environment to humans in the Netherlands. RIVM has a role as EU Community Reference Laboratory (for residues and Salmonella) and hosts several WHO Collaborating Centers including the WHO CC for Risk Assessment of Pathogens in Food and Water.
