Statens Serum Institut (SSI), a public enterprise under the Danish Ministry of Health, is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. SSI aims to reinforce health through disease control and research, and to ensure advanced control of infectious diseases, including emerging infections and biological threats. SSI has internationally recognized expertise in research, diagnostics, and surveillance of bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections as well as of antimicrobial resistance, and houses several international and national reference laboratories. In recent years, SSI has been in the forefront of applying new sequencing techniques in disease surveillance and research, especially in relation to foodborne infections. SSI is active in EU committee networks, surveillance networks, and collaborations on the detection and investigation of food- and waterborne disease outbreaks. Starting 2020, SSI will have a central part in both human and veterinary infectious disease preparedness functions, as joint monitoring of human and animal infections will be introduced – One Health!
