The VISAVET Health Surveillance Centre is a public research and teaching institution belonging to the Complutense University of Madrid (VISAVET-UCM). The main areas of interest are Animal and Public Health, Food Safety and Environment. The Centre is focused in research and training activities, together with technology transfer and scientific and technical advice to the public and private sector.
The main objective of the Centre is the development of tools that allow the early detection, control, eradication and prevention of relevant diseases in Animal and Public Health. Therefore, all the posible links in the epidemiological chain of transmission of infectious diseases are considered, including humans, livestock, wildlife and environment. The focus is not only in the infectious agent but also in its virulence features, such as virulence factors or antimicrobial resistance genes. To achieve this target techniques from several disciplines in human and animal medicines are used and developed (from classical microbiology techniques and phenotypic characterization to MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry analysis, whole genome sequencing or transmission and dissemination models of epidemic diseases).
The expertise of the Centre has been endorsed, among other achievements, through its accreditation by the Spanish Agency (ENAC) according to ISO 17025, and the designation of its laboratories as reference laboratories for several diseases (EU-RL for Bovine Tuberculosis, OIE laboratory for African Swine Fever and African Horse Sickness, Reference Laboratory of Biological Alert Network of Spain, and Official Laboratory for Salmonella and food control of the Region of Madrid).
The VISAVET Centre has more than 2.500 m2 of laboratories and animal facilities BSL-2 and BSL-3 as well as a cleanroom Class-A area. It has Central units (project management, teaching, IT, quality and biosafety), Research units (Foodborne zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance, Microbial identification and characterisation, Mycobacteria, Neglected and Emerging Diseases, Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Medicine, Viral Immunology and Preventive Medicine, Equine Health Surveillance and Epidemiology) and Assistance units (Madrid Emergency Veterinary Unit and Veterinary Livestock Assistance Unit).
