Education and Training

One Health EJP Doctoral Programme

The One Health EJP reinforces One Health collaborations between institutes by enhancing transdisciplinary cooperation and integration of activities, as delivered by our Doctoral Programme. This programme has funded 17 PhD projects from two funding calls.

Our Doctoral Programme is unique and it has delivered the following:

  • Provided interdisciplinary (med-vet-environment) training for the next generation of One Health researchers in Europe contributing to the sustainability of the One Health approach.
  • Allowed flexibility in the PhD projects to ensure innovative hypothesis-driven research.
  • Maximised international and interdisciplinary networking among One Health EJP partners in addition to the interaction with the Joint Integrative Projects (JIPs) and Joint Research Projects (JRPs).
  • Provided opportunities to explore and share skills, expertise and knowledge from the One Health EJP consortium, therefore accelerating both the rate and quality of research.
  • Built a sustainable cohort of PhD students with organised events throughout the One Health EJP.

Education & Training

One Health EJP Summer Schools

The One Health EJP Summer Schools were an important component of our Education and Training activities. They provided training and networking opportunities for the next generation of scientists from across the globe.

The Summer School events delivered knowledge, skills and competencies regarding efficient solutions to the multifaceted infectious disease global challenges to human, animal and environmental health. These events were developed through cross-disciplinary research, education and collaboration between our partners and stakeholders. The Summer Schools focused on major One Health themes of operationalisation, research to practice, environmental surveillance, and sustainability.

The Summer Schools targeted bachelor’s students, masters students, PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) with veterinary, medical and biological sciences backgrounds. Participation was also extended to students and ECRs from other fields, including social sciences, economics and public health.

One Health EJP Continuing Professional Development

The purpose of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to record and reflect on the skills, knowledge and experience gained during work. CPD includes formal and informal learning beyond any initial qualification or training previously undertaken.

Our CPD modules targeted Early Career Researchers (<5 years post PhD) from across the One Health EJP partner network and industrial or commercial environments working in a relevant sector.

The CPD modules focused on the following themes:

  • Outbreak preparedness
  • Rapid diagnostics and harmonisation of diagnostic tests
  • Big data-storage, analysis and interpretation including bioinformatics for genome sequencing
  • Digital innovation

One Health EJP Short Term Missions

Short Term Missions (STMs) were created as small travel grants with the aim of sharing scientific expertise, methodologies, equipment and facilities to harmonise the existing approaches and methodologies within the large OHEJP network. STMs have helped to drive OHEJP research forward in a collaborative and non-duplicative fashion. This has strengthened both the scientific capacity within the OHEJP and also future prevention, preparedness, detection and response of the EU to foodborne and other emerging threats across human-animal-environmental sectors.

The One Health EJP funding of STMs commenced in 2019 and continued for every year of the Programme.
