What is the Communication and Media (CaM) workshop?

Communication of science is one of the most challenging skills to acquire and yet is crucial to realising the impact of research.

A comprehensive communication workshop was held in 2020. The workshop sessions covered all media formats, including social media, and was delivered by partner institutional media relations teams, and professional science journalists.

The focus of this workshop was to develop the communication skills of the young researchers to equip them to drive their research forward and generate maximum impact for their target audiences.

This workshop was held as a virtual event hosted by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

Hristo Daskalov

Prof. Hristo Daskalov is a Head of National Centre of Food Safety, NDRVMI, BFSA. He was Deputy-President of Agricultural Academy from 2015-2017. He became Full Professor of Food Safety and Control, NDRVMI, BFSA in 2013. From December 2011 to 06.05.2015 he became a Head of National Reference Centre of Food Safety, National Diagnostic and Research Veterinary Institute, Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

He started to work in NDRVMI in 2008 as Assoc. Professor and Head of National Reference laboratory “Samlonella, Campylobacter and Antimicrobial Resistance” , Vice Head of National Reference Centre of Food Safety, National Diagnostic and Research Veterinary Institute, Sofia. Before this he was from 2000 to 2008 – Assoc. Professor , Dept. Hygiene, Technology and Control of Foodstuffs, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Trakia University, Stara Zagora. From  1995 to 2000 –  Chief-Assistant Professor, Dept. Hygiene, Technology and Control of Foodstuffs, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Trakia University, Stara Zagora. From 1992 to 1995 – Main Assistant Professor, Dept. Hygiene, Technology and Control of Foodstuffs, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Higher Institute of Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine, Stara Zagora (included in structure of Trakia University, Stara Zagora October 1995). OHEJP Communication Team

OHEJP Comms Team

The One Health EJP Communication Team is made up of three members: Piyali Basu- Work Package 6 Communications, Jade Passey- Digital Communications and Elaine Campling- Creative Communications. The team is responsible for all aspects of OHEJP communications.

Dr Piyali Basu has a specialised background of Microbial genetics after graduating with an honours degree in Biotechnology and completing a PhD in Systems and Synthetic Biology. During her professional career, Piyali has worked as a Scientist in the drug manufacturing industry and renewable energy industry. After her PhD, she worked as a Post-Doctoral researcher investigating the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  She has completed the Project Management accredited certification scheme, PRINCE2 ©, a globally recognised qualification and best practice for project management.  In 2018, Piyali joined the One Health EJP as the Education and Training activities Project Manager. Piyali also manages and oversees the OHEJP’s communication actions, and together with the Communications Team, has grown and built a robust communication strategy and platform to communicate the OHEJP’s scientific outcomes, educational programmes and training events effectively and to the appropriate target audiences.

Dr Jade Passey is responsible for all digital aspects of the OHEJP communications. Her background is in Veterinary Microbiology having graduated with an honours degree in Veterinary Bioscience and also completing a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology. Jade joined the OHEJP in 2018 as part of the Communication Team. Since joining the consortium, Jade has played a key role in the development and implementation of the OHEJP Communication Strategy and continues to grow the OHEJP’s online presence via the website, social media and scientific copywriting. Jade’s key focus is to grow the OHEJP’s audience and ensure that scientific outputs are disseminated in an impactful and sustainable manner.

Elaine Campling is a professional graphic designer and has extensive experience with brand and marketing communications. Elaine joined the OHEJP Communication Team in January 2020 to complement the existing skillset within the Team with her creative specialism. As the consortium has become established it is vital to capitalise on this status by growing the audience with a strong visual brand presence: this will be Elaine’s primary focus.

Donka Popova

Dr. Donka Popova graduated veterinary medicine at the University of Forestry – Sofia in 2003. From 2003 until the end of 2004 she worked as a lab expert at the national lab for testing raw milk within the Public health state inspectorate, part of the former National Veterinary Service (NVS). In 2005 she moved to the head office of the NVS at its European integration and international relations Directorate, actively participating at the EU integration process of Bulgaria in the veterinary sector by being part of the team responsible for the transposition of the EU legislation into the national one. After 2007 she continued her work at the same directorate at NVS (after 2011 – Bulgarian Food Safety Agency), mainly responsible for the European coordination by daily communication with the EU institutions (European commission, Council, DG SANTE, EFSA, EMA, BG Perm Rep, etc.), contact person for many DG SANTE audits (performed by the former Food and Veterinary Office), drafting of Bulgarian position for EC and Council meeting, etc. In 2011 she joined the team of the Risk Assessment Center on Food Chain, responsible for the scientific cooperation and risk communication in the food safety area. Since 2012 she has been appointed for the national EFSA focal point, and managing a team responsible for the daily contacts with EFSA, dissemination of scientific information, management of the BG scientific organizations included into EFSA Art. 36 list, organization of scientific events, etc.

Kiril Petkov

Kiril is one of three founders of the Harvard Affiliated Center for Economic Strategy and Competitiveness and the founder of the Center for Applied Studies and Innovation at Sofia University.  He teaches courses on economic development and economics of innovation. He is the CEO of ProViotic, a biotechnology company that currently operates in all four continents and has patents in both the United States and the European Union.  He graduated in finance from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and has an MBA degree from Harvard University, where he graduated with honors (ranked in the top 10% of his class). His lecturer was Professor Michael Porter, with whom he specialised in the development of cluster strategies. He worked at McCain Group, a $6-billion company that invests and manages large-scale food manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe.

Work experience like Chief expert in ‘Animal Health and Welfare Directorate’, Bulgarian Food Safety Agency; PR expert in Bulgarian Veterinary Union; Manager ‘Marketing and Communications’ of ‘Aquaponics Bulgaria’ Ltd. and Editor in Chief of the professional journals ‘Veterinary Assembly’ and ‘Veterinary Practice’; Chairman of the Non-profit Association ‘Aquaponics Bulgaria’ and Co-founder of the ‘Balkans Sustainable Development Institute’.

Mihail Milanov

Dr. Mihail Milanov graduated Veterinary Medicine at the University of Forestry-Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Sofia, Bulgaria in 2015. In the same year he started working at the University Clinic for small animals, University of Forestry, Sofia. In 2017, he earned a Certificate for professional qualification “Specialist in microbiology and diagnostics of bacterial and mycotic infections”and began work as a Veterinary Microbiologist at a private laboratory in Sofia, Bulgaria. From October 2018 onwards, he is an Assistant Professor at the National Reference Laboratory “Salmonella, Campylobacter, Staphylococci and Antimicrobial Resistance”, National Diagnostic and Research Veterinary Institute (NDRVI), Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety, Sofia (Bulgaria). In 2018 he also started a PhD (2018-2021) in the Department of Hygiene, technology and control of food products from animals, veterinary legislation and management, Trakia University-Veterinary Faculty, Stara Zagora (Bulgaria) with a topic “Determining the shelf life of meat products using predictive microbiology and Listeria monocytogenes“.

Martina Marinova

Martina Marinova is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Political Science at Sofia University (2016), specializing in European Integration. She has a master’s degree in Political management, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”(2018). Currently she is working in the public administration of BFSA, related to PR activities. Fluent in written and spoken Hebrew, English and Korean.

Georgi Georgiev

Master’s degree in High Veterinary Medical School – Sofia (1977).

PhD–thesis: Rotavirus gastroenteritis in calves” (1987.). Post doctor thesis: “Etiological, Epizootological and Pathological Studies of Bluetongue in Bulgaria” – Doctor of Veterinary Medical Sciences (2007). Professor at the National Diagnostic and Research Veterinary Medical Institute – Sofia (2008-2012).

Senior Fellow at Risk Assessment Center on the Food Chain (2012). Acting Director of “Risk Assessment in the Food Chain” Directorate of RACFCH (2017-2018). Working in the field of risk assessment with regard to animal health and welfare, biological risks and reproduction of animals; zoonotic diseases; biological risks associated with foods and antimicrobial resistance.

Since November 5th 2018 he become Director of Bulgarian Risk Assessment Center of Food Chain.

Since June 26 2020 Prof. Georgiev became a member of EFSA’s Management Board.

Evgeni Makakeevs

Dr. Evgeni Makaveev graduated veterinary medicine at the Higher Institute of zootechnics and Veterinary medicine (after 1995 – Trakia University), Stara Zagora in 1991 and has a master’s degree in financial management at the Academy of Economics, Svishtov. From 1991 to 1996 he worked as a veterinarian in a cattle fattening farm in the village of Hadjidimitrovo, Veliko Tarnovo region. From 1996 to 1997 he was a manager of milk processing plant. Between 1997 – 1998 he worked as a veterinarian in a pig farm. Since May 1998 he joined the team of the National Veterinary Service (NVS) as head of Control of veterinary products/drugs Department. From 2006 to 2008 he held the position of Secretary General of NVS and between 2008 – 2011 he moved to director of the Information systems and investments Directorate at NVS. In 2011 he started working at the Risk Assessment Center within the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) in the field of the scientific cooperation, risk assessment methods and potential risks. From June 2015 to April 2016 he moved to the position of Secretary General of BFSA. Since April 2016 he continued his work at the Risk Assessment Center on Food Chain as a director of the Risk communication, training and contact center Directorate.  In the period 2011 – 2016 he was a visiting professor of professional ethics in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Forestry, Sofia.

Yanko Ivanov

Dr. Yanko Ivanov graduated Veterinary Medicine in 1981 in the Thracian University, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria and started his career as a field veterinarian. In 1983 he joined the FMD Laboratory in Central Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Institute, Sofia, where he completed a PhD in “Diagnostic methods of FMD”. In 1990, he became the head of this Laboratory and later Director of the Institute. During the years spent in the Institute he received FMD trainings in: Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Germany, Institute for Animal Health in Vladimir, Russia, World Reference Laboratory on FMD in IAH, Protection, UK.

For the period 1997-2004, Yanko Ivanov consecutively occupied the positions of Director General and Deputy Director General of the Veterinary Services of Bulgaria.

For the period 2004-2012, he worked as international consultant: FAO Regional Coordinator for the Balkans on HPAI; Project Team Leader of EU Funded TA Projects for: Animal Identification and Registration in Serbia, Control and Eradication of HPAI in Turkey, Control and Eradication of CSF and Rabies in Serbia. After his return to Bulgaria he was appointed as CVO of Bulgaria from Dec.2013 to Dec. 2014 and Director for Training and Education and International Affairs of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency. From 2014 to 2018, Yanko Ivanov was a Chief Expert in the Risk Assessment Centre at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and part-time lecturer in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Forestry in Sofia. In June 2018, he occupied the position of advisor to the Minister and since July 2018 he is a Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry advisor was Analysis. As a recognised expert Yanko Ivanov has been elected as a member of the research group of the EU FMD Commission, from 1995 to 2001, as a member of the Executive Committee in 2001, as First Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee in 2003 and as a member of the Standing Technical Committee of EU FMD Commission of FAO, UN.

He speaks English, Russian and Serbian.

Ilian Kostov

Graduate of the Higher Veterinary School in Brno, Czechoslovakia (1985-1990). After graduation he worked as a field veterinarian in the village of Stavertsi, in Pleven district and in the veterinary station in the town of Pleven, as a veterinary virologist.

In 1996 he started working in the State Veterinary Inspectorate in Sofia, and later in the Department of Veterinary and Veterinary Medicine at the National Veterinary Institute, as chief expert in the transposition and implementation of the EU veterinary legislation.

Since 2001, he has been the director of the State Veterinary and Sanitary and Border Control Directorate and participates in the accession negotiations between Bulgaria and the EU.

Since 2005 he has been an advisor to the EU Mission in Brussels, responsible for veterinary and food safety issues.

Since 2007 he has been a veterinary expert in SANCO Directorate General, coordinating issues related to negotiations with third countries/ parties on veterinary and phytosanitary measures, as well as on food imports and animal health control.

In 2014, he worked at Intertek BA, as Food Safety Officer for SEE, HACCP certification, GMP, ISO 22000, food safety legislation analysis for different countries.

Since May 2015, he has been Director of Risk Analysis and Focal Point at the Risk Assessment Center of the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety and advisor to the Minister of Agriculture and Food.

From the end of 2016, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Risk Assessment Center of the Food Chain to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Dr. Kostov has a postgraduate specialization in Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise at National Veterinary Scientific Research Institute, Sofia. Individual specialization in raw milk control throughout the chain (milking, storage, transportation, processing and marketing) at the Meiji Research Institute, Japan. Specializations on fresh meat and poultry inspections for civil servants in the United States and animal health control of food of animal origin in many European countries. Leading auditor in ISO standards related to food safety and quality management.

Roz Morris

Roz Morris

Roz has many years’ experience as a broadcaster and media trainer at an  international level. She is a former BBC and ITV news broadcaster and co-founded TV News London more than 20 years ago. She has been an accredited trainer for the Independent Television Association. She has trained hundreds of spokespeople for a wide range of companies, public bodies, charities and professional organisations and is an expert on media performance and media interviews and how to handle them professionally.

Roz has been a news reporter, newsreader and programme presenter for BBC TV, ITN, Thames TV, and Tyne Tees TV, where she made award winning documentaries and was the first woman in the North East of England to be the regular presenter of the weekly political and business programme.  She also worked as a correspondent for BBC Scotland, based in Edinburgh, and for RTE (Irish national radio and TV) as a London Correspondent.
