OHEJP ASM 2022 – Celebrating the success of our One Health research!– 18th May 2022.

We thank all the participants at the One Health EJP 4th Annual Scientific Meeting on 11-13th April for contributing to the success of this conference! This hybrid event brought together an international audience of 276 participants from 22 countries to discuss One Health topics. We extend our thanks to the event organisers, based at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), for providing an engaging and memorable conference experience. The conference venue of the beautifully restored People’s Palace in Orvieto, Italy was an inspiring location for those participants attending the event in-person. Live streaming of the scientific programme by an onsite production team enabled participants attending online to listen and contribute.

The three-day meeting highlighted the importance of using the cross-sector One Health approach to tackle global health threats, which include zoonotic infections and antimicrobial resistance. The diverse scientific programme showcased the research developed by the One Health EJP projects that offers novel and practical solutions to these threats. The ASM provided One Health EJP PhD students with the opportunity to explain the relevance of their work, both in the roundtable discussions dedicated to PhD projects and in the three-minute thesis (3MT) competition.

We welcomed 6 invited speakers to the meeting who delivered talks on a wide range of topics, highly relevant to the recent global challenges impacting societies. These included the risks of viruses being transmitted from bats to humans, using wastewater for surveillance of foodborne and infectious agents, antimicrobial resistance in relation to environmental issues and COVID-19, and climate change impacts on food safety.

The scientific programme delivered 30 oral presentations, 99 poster presentations, 3 roundtable discussion sessions, and one session focused on the Med-Vet-Net Association activities – a great achievement for this three-day event!

Many congratulations to the OHEJP ASM 2022 Winners:

3MT Competition: Marieke de Cock, PhD project DESIRE on Developing evidence-based surveillance for emerging rat-borne zoonoses in changing environment.

Early Career Oral Presentation: Olivia Turner, PhD project WILBR on Contribution of wild birds to AMR in the environment and on farm.

Poster Presentation: Dr. Ulrike Binsker, on German meat and livestock may serve as source of ESBL E. coli carrying mcr-1.26 incx4 plasmids recently identified in humans. Her research is external to the OHEJP and is based at German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health.

News of our international meeting and the role of the One Health EJP in promoting the One Health approach is featured in the Italian publication of Quotidiano Sanità – the reference newsletter on public health and biomedical research in Italy. Read the article (in Italian) here.

We celebrate the wide range of high-quality scientific information shared at this meeting that will benefit the advancement of One Health networks in the future!
