One Health EJP ASM 2021 Official Press Release

One Health EJP Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 Official Press Release – June 2021

Denmark hosting a major international event in the field of One Health: The 3rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the One Health European Joint Programme

The 3rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the One Health European Joint Programme (One Health EJP ASM 2021) will take place between 9th – 11th of June, 2021 as a hybrid event in DGI Byen, Copenhagen, Denmark and online. Approximately 500 delegates will participate from across Europe and the world to share and discuss scientific advancements in the field of One Health.

One Health is a concept of recognising that human health is connected to the health of animals and the environment. The One Health EJP particularly focuses on pathogens that can infect both humans and animals, on antimicrobial resistance, and on emerging threats, all of which are important both in Europe and globally. The One Health approach is the basis for multidisciplinary research and collaboration among actors across the fields of public health, animal health, food safety and the environment.

At the opening session of this international scientific event, Salma Elreedy, ANSES, France, delivered the welcome from the Coordinator of the One Health EJP Arnaud Callegari, ANSES, France. CEO of Statens Serum Institut, Henrik Ullum, and Director of the National Food Institute at Technical University of Denmark, Christine Nellemann, welcomed the international audience to sunny Copenhagen.

The Scientific Coordinator of the One Health EJP Hein Imberechts from Sciensano, Belgium, provided a brief overview of the One Health EJP. The founding coordinator of the One Health EJP consortium André Jestin, France, congratulated the consortium and its coordination, and emphasised the importance of multidisciplinary, anticipatory approaches to be able to face present and future threats.

The Chair of the One Health EJP ASM 2021 Pikka Jokelainen from Statens Serum Institut reflected how international, cross-sectoral collaboration was also the key to the success of this event. Troels Mandel Vensild from Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, Peter Sousa Hoejskov from the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Europe (WHO-Europe) and Roberto A. Balbo from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) delivered their opening addresses and set the scene for the scientific discussions during the event.

The scientific programme of the event includes 6 keynote talks, 30 oral presentations and more than 160 poster presentations. Before the event there was a Satellite Workshop, Online Software Fair and Developer Meetup, organised by One Health EJP partner the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

The keynote talks of the event focus on timely topics. Dr. Sara Tomczyk from Robert Koch Institute, Germany, will talk about confronting antimicrobial resistance in times of a pandemic. This talk is followed by a duo-talk by Dr. Berit Müller-Pebody from Statens Serum Institut and Dr. Birgitte Borck Høg from the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, on DANMAP, which is an exemplary, long-lasting interdisciplinary collaboration. Prof. Maiken Cavling Arendrup and Dr. Rasmus Krøger Hare from Statens Serum Institut will tell about One Health aspects of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus, and Dr. Sylvain Brisse from Institut Pasteur, France, will discuss One Health aspects of Klebsiella. Prof. Kate Millar and François Hirsch will discuss supporting One Health researchers in ethical aspects. Final keynote talk by Prof Mark Woolhouse from University of Edinburgh, UK, has a title “What will cause the next pandemic?” – Whatever it is, the international One Health research and collaboration will likely improve our preparedness for it, which is convincingly exemplified during the days of this conference.

The One Health EJP is an international collaboration between public health, animal health and food safety institutes across Europe. Launched in January 2018, the One Health EJP is a landmark partnership between 44 partners from 22 countries across Europe. Its main focus is to strengthen collaboration and improve preparedness by means of dedicated joint integrative and research projects, and through education and training in the fields of foodborne zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and emerging threats. The One Health EJP has science-to-policy activities with stakeholders including national ministries, European stakeholders (ECDC, EFSA, EEA, EMA) and global stakeholders (FAO, OIE, WHO-Europe), helping to gain both immediate and long-term impact.
